A cold water sandwich happens when you turn a faucet off and back on quickly, and a small pocket of unheated water travels through the pipes. Modern high-end units, like those from Rinnai and Navien, have internal recirculation pumps or small buffer tanks that virtually eliminate it, so the stream of hot water stays seamless.
Will I need to upgrade my gas line or electrical panel?
Possibly. A tankless unit needs more energy in a short burst than a tank does. Gas units usually need a larger gas pipe, 3/4-inch or 1-inch, to handle the higher BTU demand. Electric units may need an electrical panel upgrade, often 3 or 4 dedicated 40-amp breakers.
