AUSTIN — Texans frustrated by not being able to get through by phone or online to take part in an April energy-efficient appliance rebate program will have another chance.

State officials have announced a winter 2010 offering using unclaimed rebate funds. The initial offer involved more than $20 million in federal stimulus funds.

Comptroller’s spokesman Allen Spelce says about $10 million was left over from the original program after all rebates were paid.

A listing Thursday on a website affiliated with the state comptroller’s office, which administers the program, says additional details will be announced later.

A. O. Smith enters into a tankless water heater joint venture with Takagi

Milwaukee, Wis.—A. O. Smith Corporation (NYSE:AOS) and Takagi Industrial Co. Ltd. of Fuji-city, Shizuoka, Japan, announced that they are establishing a joint venture to market and manufacture tankless water heaters in North America. As part of the joint venture, A. O. Smith will take over the management of Takagi’s existing North American sales and distribution organization, maintaining Takagi’s North American headquarters in Irvine, Calif. The companies expect the transaction to close in the third quarter.

“This venture is an important investment by A. O. Smith that will further expand our offering of high-efficiency water heating products,” Ajita G. Rajendra, president of A. O. Smith Water Products Company, said. “It represents a rare opportunity to combine Takagi’s well-known brand and world class tankless technology with the strong brands, customer relationships, and extensive distribution of A. O. Smith.”

Through the joint venture, A. O. Smith will offer a full line of tankless gas water heaters under its own brands in association with the Takagi brand and will assume responsibility for the Takagi brand in the U. S. and Canada.

Takagi currently manufactures a full line of gas tankless water heater models in Japan for residential and commercial applications including the recently released “second generation” 92 percent efficient T-H2 model designed for residential or light commercial applications. Upon achieving an appropriate volume threshold, the joint venture will bring manufacturing jobs to the United States and establish a production operation to support the growing needs of the business.

Privately held Takagi is one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of tankless water heating products and was the first to begin marketing tankless water heaters in the U. S. in 1994.

A. O. Smith Water Products Company is North America’s largest manufacturer of residential and commercial water heating equipment.

A. O. Smith Corporation, with 2009 sales of $2.0 billion, is a global leader applying innovative technology and energy-efficient solutions to products marketed worldwide. The company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of residential and commercial water heating equipment, offering a comprehensive product line featuring the best-known brands in North America and China. A. O. Smith is also one of the largest manufacturers of electric motors for residential and commercial applications in North America.

Flow Rate is the amount of water needed to activate the tankless water to heat the water and the amount of water needed to keep the machine running. Think about those times when you only need to use a little bit of hot water, shaving, washing hands, etc. Rheem is proud to have one of the lowest gallon per minute flow rate in the industry. Using only .4GPM to activate the burners and .26GPM to keep the unit running with a Rheem you can rest easy that you will have hot water whenever you need it.

Rinnai has decided to RAISE the warranty in qualified recirculation systems to 12 years!! This new warranty pertains to recirculating systems that are controlled through an aquastat/thermostat, a timer or an on-demand system. “We originally implemented a reduced heat exchanger warranty on condensing units in recirculating due to the accelerated wear that result from use with a constantly running circulation loop,” said Joe Holliday, Rinnai’s director of product management. “However, we realize that advances in some recirculating systems have eliminated the need of constant recirculation. This, along with advances in the strength and durability of our heat exchanger design, allows us to offer the same warranty as traditional residential installations.” This warranty change is effective immediately on all new Rinnai brand condensing tankless unit installations with qualified recirculation systems and is not retroactive. For more information about Rinnai, visit www.rinnai.us

We just installed 2 Rinnai R75LSi Tankless Hot Water Heaters in that trailer to help make sure those birds get clean! Not a bad way to spend a rainy Saturday. Incidentally, #33 Kevin Harvick finished the race in 5th place. Kevin has started the season by finishing in the top 5 six times out of seven races!! Jennifer, we wish you all the best and we can’t wait to meet Holly. When Jennifer returns she will be taking on exciting new challenges within our organization. Hurry back, we miss you already!

Taking over the Service Department is the newest member of our family, Carrie Gaffney. Carrie is a new resident to the great state of Texas via Colorado (perhaps she brought the cold weather with her??). She is also new to the tankless hot water heater industry. Carrie can often be found perusing our supplier’s web sites or reading pamphlets and service manuals to learn as much as she can. She even spent her first five days as a Hot Water employee living without hot water to better understand how our customers feel! Ok, it wasn’t really in the name of research, just a well-timed inconvenience. Carrie brings many years of customer service and administrative support to our office. We look forward to working with her. Welcome to Hot Water and to Texas, Carrie!

Howdy Houston! I hope everybody had an enjoyable and safe Independence Day. This week we’re going to talk about one of the most exciting new products in the tankless industry. That new product is the Navien condensing-type tankless water heater.
The Navien tankless water heater is the most efficient in the industry. Period. Depending on the model, the efficiency ranges from 97.3% to 98.8%! Because of this ultra-high efficiency rating, the exhaust temperatures range from 90 to 140 degrees, which allows these units to be vented with standard pvc piping as opposed to the very expensive class III stainless steel vent pipe, and in most cases, this equates to considerable savings on the installation cost.

Beginning on January 1, 2009, and continuing through December 31, 2010, the Tax Credit has been raised to 30% of the cost of a Tankless Water Heater and its installation. Our average installation runs somewhere around $3200 / $3300, so this means anyone purchasing a new Tankless Water Heater will get a refund of about $1000 (max is $1500). That’s great news for homeowners and everyone in the Tankless Industry!
One of the other trends I see in my non-stop flow of Google Alerts is an increase in online real estate postings that mention when a home includes a tankless water heater. Sure, it’s the “green” thing to do, but as Houston Realtors Emily and John Horne recently pointed out on their blog, these gizmos not only deliver a tsunami of hot water, they pay for themselves rather quickly

Some point to short comments on somebody’s personal blog. Others to an active discussion about going tankless, like this one sparked by an LA Times journalist. Then there are always a few well-intentioned references out there that I wave in front of my favorite Hot Water Guy, Tom, thinking we could feature it here or on the HWG website… but after reviewing many of them, Tom tells me a lot of information in them is just plain wrong.
Don’t be afraid to read up on tankless on the Web. But my advice is to double-check the facts with Tom and Kenny if you’re thinking of going tankless yourself! Nuff said.

Hi, I’m Tom the HotWaterGuy. Hot Water is a company in Houston, Texas, specializing in tankless water heating. That means we know more than your average bear about tankless water heating… but we’re still learning because the tankless industry is continuing to change. In fact, there are some exciting new developments afoot.
One thing coming is a hybrid tank / tankless machine. It’s supposed to combine the benefits of a traditional tank heater and a tankless water heater. You will be able to use it with a re-circulating hot water system without the need for an external tank. It also is supposed to be a direct replacement for a tank heater using the same “B” type vent material as a tank. And the cost of the machine and installation are supposed to be cheaper than a tankless water heater.
Another thing on the horizon is a 95% efficient tankless water heater that we can vent with PVC plastic pipe. It will be more expensive a machine but you will save on the price of the stainless steel vent piping. I’m guessing the cost will be somewhat more than a regular tankless, but the 95% efficiency will be the deciding factor for some people.
Anyway, stay tuned to our blog for more developments. And please ask questions or post comments here whenever you like. I’d love to get a conversation started.
